THE ATTRACTION FOT THE POLAR REGION TO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN ONCE IS IRRESISTIBLE
A great Italian explorer of the North Pole – Umberto Nobile – in one of his diaries wrote these beautiful words:
“The attraction for the polar regions to those who have been once is irresistible. That sense of absolute freedom of the spirit, the distance from every material things than those essential to survival, the decline in value of ideas, principles, feelings so important and essential in the civilized world. […] The human law which no longer exists and gives way to the law of nature. […] That immense solitude where everyone feels king of himself. All this once again proved not to be forgotten and has a charm to which it is impossible to resist.“
These words take up and express emotions that only those who have been lucky enough to travel to the pole areas of have tried. It may seem strange, but these feelings and thoughts are exactly the ones that pass in mind when you are in remote areas of our planet with a small number of people and in contact with the truest nature.
After an initial phase of acclimatization, both physical and mental, it realizes immediately that there is a completely different way of life compared our everyday life. Immediately may realize that, even if for many people it is hard to understand, you can no longer live without these moments and places … like wrote Nobile!
The polar trips have always attracted interest since ancient times. In fact, they began when an British man in 1607, Henry Hudson, onboard his ship Hopewell stopped at 80° North. This first real attempt succeeded or many others but only in the 1926, Umberto Nobile onboard the dirigible Norge with his friends and fellows Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth reached, for the first time, officially the North Pole… over 300 years after the first attempt!
Among the reasons that led people to explore the poles in the first place there has always been the need to discover that in some people was, and still is today, stronger than in others. Promoter of several polar exploration was also the scientific research. In this case the expedition onboard the dirigible Italia was the first air shipment of Arctic regions organized mainly with scientific purposes. Inside the dirigible, in fact, there was a real laboratory with several international scientists and the results were published in different countries.
Today the equipments are very different from those that were used at the beginning of the last century. We can, in fact, count on technical clothing and innovative stuff that can enable us to work even at temperatures and extreme situations. However, we must never forget that the poles, even today with modern technical equipment, are areas where the risks are very high yet.
During the months spent to the North Pole I had the fortune to visit some of the places where Nobile, in his last tragic expedition, passed. His last expedition remains today, unfortunately, the strongest memory associated to this name. Around this event, in an attempt to save his friend Umberto, lost his life Roald Amundsen… another great polar explorer. Along the route travelled today some monuments and effigies dedicated to these great explorers and their amazing stories were present and thanks them today we can enjoy a bit ‘of what it was!
