NAZCA DESERT, LINES FROM THE SKY
The word Nazca is synonymous all over the world of big geoglyphs that hundreds years ago have been engraved in the vast plains of the Peruvian desert. A lot of questions about their meaning and their authors were asked and they have attracted the interest of thousands of people, from travellers to scientists. The lines and figures hide many mysteries without any real explanation also for all those scientists who have dedicated time and effort to this purpose.
Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Andes in the south of Peru, during the visit it calls to mind strange sensations. Sometimes people don’t appreciate them even if they are unique and visible, of this size, only here. However the situation is completely different when people have the possibility to spend time flying over the geoglyphs. In fact, there are about 13000 different lines which create more or less 800 different figures and drawings. Some of these drawings are really known as, for example, the hummingbird, the monkey, the spider, the whale, the astronaut and so on. But looking in detail the desert from the airplane an incredible number of other lines, without any apparent meaning, can be observed.
The geoglyphs belonging to the Nazca culture which was in the area between the 100 and 600 A.D. left in few years, as a civilization, an immeasurable cultural testament. The lines were discovered in 1927 but only from the 1946, with Maria Reiche and Paul Kosok, the entire area was mapped for the first time.
The archaeological reserve today, after few problems with the management and sporadic problems with people in the last decade, is under the responsibility of the Peruvian Government represented by the Ministry of Culture. Thanks to the tourism in the area and other investments, the Ministry of Culture has the possibility to keep the reserve in good conditions and, moreover, a lot of native people are designated to preserve and manage this mysterious place.
